How do I find horror movies I haven’t seen?
Move beyond the same familiar recommendations with a viewing history, smaller lists, and a choice between classics and deeper cuts.
Start by marking the horror movies you have already seen, then explore one subgenre, decade, or director at a time. A recommendation for Alien is less useful if you have watched it twelve times and want something new. Work through a familiar decade or the top 100 and use the quick Seen action. You do not need to write a review or remember the viewing date. Keep a separate rating when you want to record your opinion. Having seen a film does not automatically mean you liked it, and an old favourite can still belong in a rewatch plan.
Choose classics, deeper discoveries, or a mix
An obscure film is not automatically a better recommendation. If you are catching up on horror, choose essentials during Dreadlist onboarding and start with the widely discussed foundations. If those titles already fill your diary, choose deeper discoveries and explore beyond that starting set. A mixed approach works well for October: familiar anchors on some nights and new films on others. The preference helps shape suggestions; it does not make any film mandatory.
Change one part of a film you loved
Pick a useful thread. After a slasher, try an earlier decade in the same subgenre. After a haunted-house film, follow its director to a different setting. If creature effects were the draw, look through creature features rather than simply sorting for maximum fear. Dreadlist’s subgenre, decade, and director lists make these starting points easy to browse. Opening a film’s details gives you more context before you add it to your countdown.
Separate unfamiliar from unsuitable
A film can be new to you and still be wrong for tonight. Check the mood, running time where known, and content information. Fear and gore describe different experiences; neither is a measure of how good a film is. Detailed intensity ratings and content notes cover only part of Dreadlist’s catalog. Turn a discovery into a real movie night
Save a few candidates, check current viewing options in your country, and choose a date. You can manually add your favourite to the countdown or nominate it to a private Coven. Your partner can accept it as an alternative even if it is not their first choice. Keep a spare candidate for a film that leaves a service. A short list you can actually watch is more useful than hundreds of recommendations you never revisit.
